![]() I don’t like medieval capitalism because it requires far more communication and standardization than I like for my warring factions and something about everyone using a carpet makes it incredibly mundane (which could actually be a beautiful analogy/allegory for our lives today). Maybe only a magic user could control it for some reason. I don’t think peasants or your normal 9-5 kinda guy would be able to master it. I think maneuvering a carpet would be even harder. Riding a horse and driving a car is a skill to some extent. All the bad ones deteriorated and the good ones are trapped under some anchoring dungeon, woven from a better time long ago. It’s something that maybe was common place but now because that empire fell (all fantasy is post apocalyptic, even if you don’t think so), these are coveted. Double Bass instrument, and during flight it must play Lavender Town theme.Giant recorder (flute/oboe/bassoon/etc.).They sit in a giant spell book that flaps its book boards like wings. So acquainted witches can transport themselves to the house that has a cauldron of a witch that they are on good terms with. Maybe all witches' cauldrons are like potential destination points. The second eye socket is great for a passenger. Witches have inherent access to a plume of black swirling magical wind/air/dust/cloud/mist that they 'sit' in and fly on. Bat-styled Harley Davidson (a little off topic but I love the idea of demons in general riding motorcycles). The witch's hat is the levitating object. ![]() Fly around while sitting inside an empty cauldron. This levitation property could be used with other objects like the bicycle, getting past the problem of "but bicycles are heavy." So you could actually just hold the broom vertically in your hand if you wanted and you'd levitate with the broom as long as you held it. So the Flying Witch anime/manga got around the discomfort of the broom by making contact with the broom cause levitation. Not to mention, transformation magic and dealing with animals is going to be pretty complicated in most fantasy stories. ![]() And unless your familiar is a large animal it would be difficult to bring people and supplies along with you. Turning into an animal means you still have to put in effort to make the journey, just in a different form, and this creates a whole host of new problems. Familiars, or transformation magic could work, but this isn't as "practical" as as a broom.Similarly, a flying cloak or cape (Like Doctor Strange's Cloak of Levitation) could work, although that might look a bit silly. Another alternative is a large strip of cloth, like a magic rug or blanket, which is more comfortable than a broom, except in my opinion it doesn't look as cool. It's main plus is that it has wheels which might make take-off and landing easier but that's it. A bicycle wouldn't really work, as it's much heavier, more complicated to maintain, and it's only slightly less uncomfortable than a broom.I'm ruling out having the witches teleport or use some system of portals because quite frankly I think that's a little boring.I've already come up with several ideas, but please let me know of any more that you can come up with. That being said, what are some simple, yet cool and practical alternatives to riding a broom? Preferably something that is either a household object, or at least something that isn't super hard to obtain. Also brooms are very narrow and it's easy to fall off. One solution would be to put a seat on the broom, but in my opinion that kind of ruins the aesthetic. However, I imagine one drawback with brooms is that they're uncomfortable to sit on for long periods of time. A broom can be carried on the back or hidden in a corner with ease. They're light, have a streamlined, aerodynamic profile, and look simple yet striking. Brooms are easy to find and cheap to make, and can be easily repaired (physically at least, I'm sure the flight magic is more complicated).
